It would seem that Black became a decorating colour when we started to use it for chimney backs and some woodwork in the 17th century. It was originally based on carbon from burning oils but mention of the modern way to mix it using carbon came in Tingry’s manual in the 1830s and I have christened our oil-free natural version accordingly! At Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, we declare all our ingredients, Tingry is made up of carbon black, white, blue and earth pigment, to give a ‘near’ black for a dark sophisticated look when applied to walls or woodwork.
We strongly advise ordering a sample pot of this colour before committing to a paint tin as the light can greatly affect this dark grey/blue colour.
I have always wanted to create a house with dark walls. You have to get the balance right though - go for striking, not gloomy. Tingry is the perfect choice.

‘The shade changes beautifully with the light and goes from more of a neutral to a very slight plaster pink, and feels elegant whilst giving the room depth. It’s always been important to me to try and soften the old gnarly features of the stone and beams which we have here so that it never …

I knew I wanted to paint the ceiling yellow the minute I saw this room, and specifically this colour, Naples Yellow. it is the most hopeful and happiest colour, and makes me think of Positano beach umbrellas – particularly as I can see the sea from the window. It’s my bedroom ceiling, so it’s …
The first colour I knew I wanted to use was ‘Invisible Green’ by Edward Bulmer in the drawing room. I realised that I’ve never met a bright green room I don’t love, yet I rarely use the colour. This is the green of Babar’s coat – a shade that goes with so much, as it …
